The less good news is: French nightlife has its own rules, and a few American instincts will get you in trouble. Here's what to know to fit in fast.
What's different from a US night out
Nights start way later
In the US, a Friday night usually starts at 8-9 PM. In Nice, that's still dinner time. Bars don't really fill until 10 PM. Clubs are empty before midnight and don't peak until 1-2 AM. If you show up to a club at 11 PM you'll be one of three people on the dancefloor.
Drinks cost more, but you tip less
A beer is €6-8, a cocktail €10-14, a shot €4-6. That's higher than a US dive bar but you don't tip 20% on top — tipping in France is rounding up or a coin or two. Service is included in the price.
Open container is normal
You can buy a beer at a corner shop and drink it walking down the Promenade. Police don't care. It's how locals do apéro.
Bouncers care about ratios, not IDs
In the US, the door is about ID checks. In Nice, the door is about the male-to-female ratio of your group. Solo guys and all-male groups get rejected. Mixed groups walk in.
No drinking culture of "finishing your drink quickly"
French nightlife is slower. People nurse a beer for an hour on a terrace. Americans who try to do US-style power-drinking burn out by midnight. Pace yourself.

- Wayne's — the anglo magnet, lots of US travelers, live music, classic American bar energy
- Paddy's Irish Pub — Irish but mostly anglo crowd, comfortable for first-time Europe trips
- Akathor — international party crowd, where the Orange Bar Crawl starts
- La Chapa — seafront, mixed crowd, easy entry point
- Saint Riquier — communal tables, bar games, perfect for groups
The fastest way to make American friends (and meet non-Americans) in Nice
A pub crawl, on your first or second night. We see this pattern every summer: US travelers show up, do a Yellow or Orange crawl on night 1, then spend the rest of the week with the group they met. About 50% of our crawl participants are American — you'll find your crew — but the other 50% (Brits, Aussies, Italians, Erasmus students) is what makes the night feel like real travel.

Practical American checklist for Nice
- Bring your passport. Required for under-21 ID checks, useful for everything else.
- Notify your bank. US cards work in France but some banks block first-day transactions abroad.
- Get an eSIM (Airalo, Holafly) for a week of data — way cheaper than US roaming.
- Cash isn't really needed. Tap-to-pay works everywhere.
- Tipping: 5-10% in restaurants if service was good. €1-2 at bars is plenty. Tips are appreciated for pub crawl guides but never expected.
- Smoking is everywhere. French nightlife is way smokier than US bars. Indoors is non-smoking but terraces are smoke central.
- Public restrooms are scarce — use the bar's, which means buying something first
- Crosswalks: use them. Jaywalking gets honks.
What to wear
Nice is more casual than Cannes or Monaco but smarter than your average US college bar. The cheat sheet:
- Sneakers OK at most bars and pub crawl clubs
- Avoid sport shorts and flip-flops — some clubs refuse them
- Jeans + t-shirt + sneakers = totally fine at Vieux Nice bars
- For Cannes or Monaco: bring at least one smart outfit

- Day 2: Old Town walking morning, beach, pub crawl in the evening
